Leadership Development

Jake Reisberg, Best Buddies Pennsylvania Ambassador

My name is Jake Reisberg and I am an Ambassador with Best Buddies Pennsylvania. I am a college student on the autistic spectrum who just recently finished at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School and started at Montgomery County Community College.

I graduated from PW in 2015, but stayed two additional years for transition services through the special education program.

When I started school at Plymouth Whitemarsh (PW), my social skills were very low, I had trouble connecting with peers and I didn’t have many friends. One of my teachers recommended that I join Best Buddies. I was unsure at first.

I realized later that it was a great move, because in the six years that I was involved with Best Buddies at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School, I improved my social skills and began to be more confident around other people.  I now have many friends who, even though some are away at college, I still meet up with during school breaks.

My last year at PW, our Program Manager asked me to attend an ambassador training. I thought it was another great step for me in expanding and working on my social skills. Now I am an Ambassador. I attend Ambassador trainings and practice my speeches.

This year I spoke at TasteBuds in Philadelphia. Being an Ambassador pushes me out of my comfort zone.  I also attend events at Colonial Middle School, where I assist the advisor with activities. I am a role model for younger students like me.

One-to-One Friendship

Halie and Jared, Best Buddies Rhode Island

I was matched with Jared Plants sophomore year of high school. We have spent one year as buddies, and it has been a great experience. Jared has a vibrant personality and constantly makes me laugh and brightens my days. I look forward to the time we spend together both in and out of school.

In school, I often visit his class for an hour a week, where we watch music videos and football videos, along with interacting with his classmates. Jared’s favorite thing to do is go out for ice cream; a love we both share. Jared and I constantly get frozen yogurt and ice cream and go for walks and paint together.

I can honestly say that joining the Best Buddies program has been the best decision of my high school career because of the constant joy and satisfaction being involved in such a positive program.

Jared and I have been not only Best Buddies but best friends for two years.

More than anything, I love seeing his face light up in the hallway when I walk by and knowing that we are both making a difference in each other’s lives. Jared brightens my day whenever I spend time with him, and I know he does that for so many others as well.

Having such a strong Best Buddies program at Cumberland High School has impacted the environment at our school. I can confidently say that the majority of students in our school know every single one of our buddies by name, and many consider them friends. I am so proud of our chapter and its impact on changing the negative stigma around holding relationships with those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Halie Walton

Halie and Jared are a perfect match and an exemplary model of the standards and values of the Best Buddies Organization. These two teens share inside jokes, laughs, and genuinely enjoy being around each other.

Halie is patient and encouraging towards Jared, and Jared really brings Halie out of her shell. They are an example to other students at CHS, as well as anyone involved in Best Buddies.

Leadership Development

Ryan Flemming, Best Buddies Rhode Island Ambassador

My name is Ryan Fleming and I am here representing the Lincoln High School chapter of Best Buddies. I have been lucky enough to be nominated twice to be an Ambassador for Best Buddies.  I am also my school chapter’s Buddy Director!

Having Autism has changed my life. People didn’t want to be my friend. I felt segregated from my school community. Today, however, my life, my experiences with Best Buddies, and my experiences with my school community have been changing for the better.

When I was in 7th grade, I met Jayden. He was an inspirational athlete that I admired. We became friends. As we continued our friendship to high school, Jayden and I became members of Best Buddies at Lincoln High School. We showed our school community what it means to be inclusive and be friends.  After this, I began to make more friends and gained more social skills for when I meet new people.

As we became active members of this great Best Buddies chapter in beautiful Lincoln, we were selected to meet the Patriots #12 quarterback, Mr. Tom Brady, at Gillette Stadium. It was an amazing life changing experience, that wouldn’t have been possible without Best Buddies in our wonderful state of Rhode Island.

Ryan Flemming, Best Buddies Rhode Island AmbassadorLastly, Best Buddies runs in the family. Through my experiences with Best Buddies, I inspired my sister, Lynsey, to start the first ever middle school chapter at Lincoln Middle School. This will give younger kids opportunities to make a “Best Buddy.” I’m happy that my passion has inspired my sister to make changes within her own school.

I am so happy to have met my inspirational buddy, Jayden. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to meet Tom Brady and inspire my sister to create a chapter at Lincoln Middle School.

I encourage you all to create your own experiences in Best Buddies.  You can create a powerful message to spread friendships throughout the world.

One-to-One Friendship

Stephanie & Sarah, Best Buddies Rhode Island Citizens Pair

Joining the Best Buddies Citizens pair program has been such a rewarding experience for me! When I initially signed up, I wasn’t sure what to expect and I am so happy I took the chance to be paired with a buddy.

My best buddy, Stephanie, has grown to more than just my “buddy”; she’s a really good friend of mine! We have so much fun getting together every month, whether it’s going to our favorite restaurants, shopping, or attending Best Buddies events – we always have a great time.

I thought that signing up for this program would mean I was making a difference in someone else’s life, but she’s made a difference in mine and has shown me what it means to truly be someone’s best buddy!

Sarah
Citizens Peer Buddy

Stephanie & Sarah, Best Buddies Rhode Island Citizens Pair

When Stephanie and Sarah first met, it was a hit right away! They bonded over their love for travel and eating healthy. Throughout their months matched, I read nothing but great things in their friendship updates.

The girls went shopping together, met each other’s families and friends, participated in multiple Best Buddies Rhode Island events and went to many different restaurants across the state.

Through thick and thin, Steph and Sarah have been there for each other. Every time I see Steph, she only has wonderful things to say about her “best friend Sarah. You can truly see Steph light up when talking about her buddy, and vice versa.

Life after Best Buddies has been completely different for both women. Steph is now an ambassador for Best Buddies Rhode Island and Sarah now has someone to text all the time and someone that cares for her no matter what.

This pair is truly an inspirational match and I strive for more matches to be like them.

One-to-One Friendship

Carolyn & Haley, Best Buddies Tennessee Citizens Pair

It has been two years since Haley noticed Carolyn working the check-in desk at her job at the YMCA. Haley hadn’t seen Carolyn at church in quite some time and went over to say hello. Carolyn shared that the reason she hadn’t been to church in a while was because she didn’t have a ride to get there.

“Do you think you could take me?” Carolyn quickly asked.

“Yeah I think I can do that!” Haley replied.

Little did either of them know that such a simple exchange would lead to such an incredible friendship.

Haley began spending time with Carolyn and learned about Best Buddies and the impact it had made on her life. After attending several events together, Haley applied to the Citizens program, eager to become Carolyn’s official buddy. On Valentine’s Day, they were matched!

Carolyn and Haley’s friendship is unique in more ways than just its beginnings as a natural friendship. The two have a bond that is absolutely beautiful to watch, attending concerts and sporting events together, and having girl’s nights and sleepovers regularly. Carolyn even credits her “style” to Haley’s influence, and both ladies love getting dressed up and going out on the town together.

Carolyn & Haley, Best Buddies Tennessee Citizens PairBecoming an official buddy pair has opened some amazing doors for them. The pair are extremely passionate about promoting the mission of Best Buddies and talk about our organization with anyone who will listen.

They have shared their touching story at numerous speaking engagements, including the 2017 Hyannis Port Challenge, leaving listeners in tears.

Haley competed in last year’s Nashville Champion of the Year campaign with Carolyn right by her side as her official campaign manager. The two took full advantage of Haley’s Champion of the Year platform and put on several events, determined to raise as much money and awareness for Best Buddies as they possibly could.

Their hard work paid off and Haley was the runner-up, raising $12,000! The campaign ended at Party with a Purpose where Haley and Carolyn danced the night away in their coordinated 1920’s attire.

Haley has experienced such inspiration from her friendship with Carolyn, growing increasingly passionate about serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Haley felt led to make a career jump and pursued a new path with Best Buddies.

Carolyn & Haley, Best Buddies Tennessee Citizens PairShe was recently hired as the Citizens Program Manager at Best Buddies Tennessee. When asked what made her decide to pursue a different career path, her answer is simple: Carolyn.

Integrated Employment

Daniel Mirtes, Best Buddies Jobs Tennessee

Daniel is 25 years old and has autism, but he is very quick to tell you that he is not defined by his disability. Before working with Best Buddies Jobs, Daniel found the job seeking process to be very difficult and unsupported.

He did his own resumes and went on interviews with the support of his family and friends. He secured a position as a store clerk at Publix and worked there for two years. He realized that his talents and skills were not being utilized and decided to seek employment that matched both his skills and passion.

For Daniel, full-time work was a goal that would hopefully lead to independent living. In 2015, Daniel decided to apply for assistance from the Best Buddies Jobs program, which was just getting started. Daniel was one of the first participants in the Best Buddies Tennessee Jobs program in 2015, and listed his dream job in an office setting, with a focus on tech work.

After several interviews, he found a full-time position at Verus Healthcare as a medical equipment technician. His responsibilities included cleaning the CPAP machines. After mastering this position, Verus quickly learned that Daniel had more to offer and he was promoted to Service Technician.

David Quilleon, Daniel Mirtes, and Anthony Kennedy Shriver

“I get to work every day with awesome people and help people all day with computer issues and problem-solving in the IT department,” stated Daniel when asked what he loves most about his job. His team loves his effort and drive him to be the best he can be!

This promotion allowed Daniel to achieve another life goal –  owning his own home. Daniel recently put a down payment on a condo in Franklin. Construction should be completed this fall and he is excited to move in and start a new chapter of independent living.

He is excited about living on his own and learning to budget, cook for himself, and all of the other homeowner responsibilities.  As he states, this is a dream come true and could not have been possible without Best Buddies and the team at Verus who saw his talent and gave him a chance.

Daniel is a shining star in the Jobs program and was awarded Best Buddies Jobs Employee of the Year at the Best Buddies Leadership Conference in July of 2017. He wears this award proudly and we all share his excitement. Not only has Daniel accomplished so many goals over the last two years, but he also believes in giving back.

Daniel Mirtes, Best Buddies Jobs TennesseeHe is quick to say yes for any opportunity to speak at events about his life and Best Buddies. The message he wants to get across to every person with IDD is to set goals, dream big, and to never forget that anything is possible!

Leadership Development

Madison and Angelica

Angelica has defied the odds and was chosen to speak during the closing ceremonies at Best Buddies Leadership Conference. She was also chosen for the new Ambassadors Leadership Academy and took “Partners in Policy Making” courses in Nashville this year.

Before graduation, her final project was on Best Buddies and her desire to work with the Jobs program to help people with disabilities find employment. Her story is truly remarkable and she has touched many lives with her testimony.

“Being positive is the key to my existence and everyone has a struggle that they want to overcome. I do not want my cerebral palsy to define me. By the time I was twelve years old, I had lost everyone in my family.

My mom passed away when I was twelve and my father passed away when I was a baby. I had an older sister, but she passed before I was born and my grandparents all passed away. I was born in San Francisco, California, but grew up in Memphis, Tennessee. I went into foster care and then I had to go back to San Francisco to become emancipated.

I left San Francisco on a Grey Hound bus after saving up all my money and headed back to Memphis. I had made up my mind that I was going to live independently.

Something was still missing and that was friendship.

Madison and AngelicaI had heard about the Best Buddies college program at the University of Memphis and I decided to join. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. There, I met Madison, my buddy. She went from being my buddy to being my family. Madison does not see my disability, she sees me.

She supports me in my dreams and we both compete together in beauty pageants and we have both won many. My biggest achievement was winning the National Miss Amazing.

I want to show people who don’t have disabilities that people with disabilities are capable of doing anything. I want to help people with disabilities get employed. I want to show people with disabilities that they are capable.

Best Buddies has put so many people in my life that love me and care about me. It makes me feel so good. Best Buddies is a wonderful program.”

Leadership Development

Hi! My name is Sarah and I am a Best Buddies Ambassador in Houston, Texas. I started my Best Buddies journey back in 2006 at James E. Taylor High School. Back then, I was quiet and did not have many friends.

I found out about Best Buddies after my teacher, Mrs. Campbell, told me it would be a good way to meet new people and make new friends. Little did I know that joining Best Buddies in 2006 would change my life.

Fast forward to 2008, I got my first taste of leadership as a Buddy Director for my high school chapter. I liked having my voice heard, so I also decided to become a Best Buddies Ambassador that same year.

Being a Buddy Director and an Ambassador boosted my confidence so much that when I graduated, I decided that I wanted to start having more responsibilities; I decided that moving out of my parent’s house was the next step.

My journey to independence was not easy. It started with finding a job. I currently work at Sweet Heat Jams, where I serve jam with the confidence this job has given me. I am now ready to take on even more responsibilities. After getting this job, my step was moving into my own space. At first, it was difficult getting used to my new surroundings, but with the help of my friends and family, I made the adjustment.

My experiences with Best Buddies has made me step out of my comfort zone. As an Ambassador, I am now able to tell people why it is important for people with IDD to have jobs and independent lives. Last year, I went to the Best Buddies Leadership Conference and got to hear some very inspirational stories.

These stories made me realize that I can do anything if I set my mind to it — anyone can. As an Ambassador, I am now able to share my story and tell people why it is important for people with IDD to have jobs and lead independent lives

Best Buddies helped make all of this happen,  and I am thankful to be able to share my journey with you.

One-to-One Friendship

Aimee and Andre

Pizza, parties, bowling, movies, smiles, and laughs. These are just a few words that describe the friendship between Aimee Rodriguez and Andre Simon. Aimee has been a Best Buddies participant at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas since September 2015.

“I didn’t know what Best Buddies was until I got to Southwestern University. My aunt who has special needs has lived with my family since I was in 9th grade, so I knew what it was like to develop a close friendship with someone who has special needs,” said Aimee.

When Aimee was a freshman in college, she met the Best Buddies crew at an Activities Fair and completely fell in love with their purpose within the community. That’s when she decided to get involved with the organization.

“This year is the first time I’ve been paired with a buddy, because the last two [years] I’ve been an associate member. I hope to get more people involved in this organization before I graduate from Southwestern.”

Matched in September 2017, Andre and Aimee have already become such close friends. They spend time with each other at the chapter’s bi-monthly events and holiday parties. The movie release of Marvel’s Black Panther has been one of the highlights of their friendship.

“Andre and I are really into watching movies, in particular, superhero movies. Anytime there’s a fight scene, he’s sure to move along to the punches and kicks,” said the college student. ” He’s always sure to give each of us the parts in the movie and he tends to be the hero of the plot. We also go bowling and try to attend any of the free events that Southwestern hosts for the students.”

Since joining Best Buddies, Aimee has led the chapter by not only fulfilling multiple officer positions but also by developing close relationships with the Buddies in their chapter.

“The Buddies constantly remind me to always be myself and to own who I am. They constantly inspire me to want to do more, go out and volunteer, to sing and dance. As I’ve come to know, a lot of our buddies are volunteers all throughout the community and every time we put on an event, they are never afraid to go up in the front and perform something.”

Integrated Employment

My name is Zsabraun, but I go by Zee. Before Best Buddies, I had been looking for employment for three years. I was unhappy, I had no direction, and I was struggling financially and I was under a lot of stress.

My mother worried about me all the time because I had no goals or purpose. I applied for many jobs but nothing worked. I then attended a job fair where Best Buddies Texas was present.

I loved the idea behind the Best Buddies Jobs program and I knew that I needed Best Buddies’ help. I decided to sign up. I officially joined the Best Buddies Job Program on October 31, 2017.

Several weeks later, I started meeting Keeton and working! Since starting my job there, my life has improved greatly. I am a happier person! I have gained new friends and an amazing support system through ReddyIce and Best Buddies.

My parents now have peace of mind because I am becoming self-supporting and financially stable. My mom, Angela, wants everyone to know that Best Buddies gave her son a future. The thing I love the most about my job is the people! Everyone at my job is kind, encouraging, and supportive of me. I look forward to going to work every day.

Having an income has opened the door for me to go back to college to further my education. With that education, I hope to one day become a full-time employee with a salary and benefits.

Before my job with ReddyIce, I had not worked much with computers. Through my job, I have learned and developed computer skills that will benefit my future.

I want to grow and develop more new skills so that one day I can advance my career. Most importantly, I want to grow as a person.

Bridging the gap: Special Olympics and Best Buddies create global movement to build inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities

– Over 200 million individuals with intellectual disabilities continue to face exclusion in workplaces, schools, and communities globally.

– More than 60% of people still believe that individuals with intellectual disabilities should be segregated in the school and the workplace.

– Special Olympics and Best Buddies are growing the success of ‘Spread the Word to End the Word’ into Spread the Word: Inclusion to combat this discrimination.

– Tweet this pledge on March 6th: I #PledgetoInclude thru my words and actions. Will you? Pledge now to change the game for people with ID at http://spreadtheword.global

WASHINGTON, March 6, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Special OlympicsBest Buddies International and supporters from around the world will unite on Wednesday, March 6th for the annual Spread the Word Day.

The Spread the Word to End the Word campaign has worked to spread respect and inclusion for 10 years by addressing the excluding and demeaning impact of the word “retard(ed).” Founded by Soeren Palumbo and Tim Shriver, Jr. in 2009, Spread the Word has had more than 1 million people pledge to end their use of the R-word. In 2017, 70% of teens reported speaking out against the wrong use of the R-word when heard in conversation, up nearly 50% since 2009. Our campaign’s new form – Spread the Word: Inclusion – builds on the success of the past 10 years by challenging everyone to commit to respect.

“From our work bringing together people with and without intellectual disabilities (ID), we believe that inclusion is a skill – one that our world needs now more than ever. With this global campaign, we are challenging all people to practice the skill of inclusion, develop it, model it, and teach it,” said Soeren Palumbo, co-founder of Spread the Word and now Senior Director of Global Youth Engagement at Special Olympics.

“In a time when our world is mired in exclusion, we need champions of inclusion. The leaders of Spread the Word to End the Word have been those champions in communities around the world for more than a decade by challenging the pervasive use of the word “retard(ed),” said Tim Shriver, Jr., co-founder of Spread the Word. “In this next decade we are excited for Spread the Word: Inclusion to support leaders to further transform their communities into beacons of inclusion.”

Spread the Word: Inclusion invites all people to commit to individual acts of inclusion. It highlights the divisions in schools, workplaces, and communities that lead to social isolation. Over 15% of the global population are estimated to have a disability, with 80% in low-income or developing countries; and many of them continue to be left out educationally, socially, and economically. With concrete acts of inclusion, we take steps towards full inclusion for the world’s largest minority.

Special Olympics Youth Ambassador Sydney Meininger says, “I am excited for Spread the Word because it helps students understand that not everyone is the same and celebrates individuals who may be different. My school is creating our own puzzle where we are going to be designing puzzle pieces from end to end making one giant puzzle.”

The Spread the Word: Inclusion campaign continues to advocate for and with people with ID to make our society more inclusive. Special Olympics offers inclusive sports, leadership, and education activities in nearly 6,500 schools across the country. Many of these schools host Spread the Word events led by students inviting their peers to commit to social inclusion.

Best Buddies International youth programs promote one-to-one friendship opportunities and leadership development in schools around the world. In many of the nearly 2,900 middle school, high school, and college Best Buddies chapters worldwide, Spread the Word has become an integral part of the Best Buddies’ mission.

This year, Spread the Word: Inclusion supporters — including the Golisano Foundation and thousands of schools around the nation — have activated their communities to engage around the day with pledge events.

Leadership Development

Hi! I’m Annemarie Carrigan and I’d really want you to know that Best Buddies is a really important part of my life and it has helped me through a lot of emotional and stressful situations.

In my life, I feel like people never really understood me or knew that I could be a good friend. But with my family’s support, we were able to start a chapter of Best Buddies at Highland Park High School and get to be a part of this amazing organization.

The difference Best Buddies has made in my life is that now I get to go out to great events and make good friends.

Having Down Syndrome or special needs is a perfectly great life to have but it’s better with Best Buddies because it is a wonderful thing to know you have friends. There are lots of stresses in life and we all need to know that we are all made perfectly just the way we are! Best Buddies helps everyone understand that people with Special Needs CAN be great friends and everyone is amazing in their own way! Thank you to all of you who support Best Buddies and I hope you understand the difference you are making in the lives of people like me.
