Businesses Look to Create Employment for Intellectual, Developmentally Disabled

Businesses Look to Create Employment for Intellectual, Developmentally DisabledNashville, Tenn — If it seems like Leo Kennedy is always on the move, he is.

Kennedy says working at Home Depot has helped him get into shape but the benefits really go far beyond that for someone dealing with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“Mainly it’s to make my parents proud,” said Kennedy.

The 24 year old got the Home Depot job through the Best Buddies Jobs Program.

“It’s an income. It’s a sense of pride. It’s a sense of independence,” said program supervisor Laura Berry.

Berry says the need for programs like her is actually greater now than it used to be.

Programs that once offered separate job opportunities for people like Kennedy have shut down in Tennessee.

Statistically more than 80% of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are living unemployed.

“So there aren’t a lot of options for them unless they go into community employment and we’re helping create that employment,” said Berry.

Kennedy is among the first 8 participants.

He’s done so well he’s now full time and his boss utilizes him to help new employees.

“Leo is a great coach, job coach, just watching him work,” said Home Depot Manager Sheila Sites.

Park West Gallery has donated $50,000 to both the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation and Best Buddies International. The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, founded by artist and scientist Harvey, works to support efforts that protect marine habitats and environments.

“Park West Gallery has done a tremendous job in supporting my artwork and is now furthering their commitment to our oceans by making a generous financial contribution to benefit the research and education work of the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation,” Harvey said.

Best Buddies International is an organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-on-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Neo-pop artist Britto has supported the organization since 1994.

“Good will and kindness are contagious,” Britto said. “It’s wonderful to see the Park West Foundation giving generously to Best Buddies, an important organization that I have held dear to my heart for many years.”

The foundation is providing $15,000 to Bone’s Forever Wildlife Foundation, which is working with the Wildlife ACT Fund Cheetah Project. Bone, a wildlife artist and conservationist, says the project will protect South Africa’s cheetah population with monitoring and research techniques.

“What we need to do is get in there and collar four or five of these cheetah to start monitoring them, because we have absolutely no idea what their conditions are or where they are,” Bone said. “Park West is in a position to be able to donate, and I know it’s going to be a win-win.”

Founded in 2006, the Park West Foundation supports art education as well as providing resources to foster care youth. Park West Gallery in Detroit connects artists to collectors via land and sea art auctions by creating entertaining, educational and welcoming environments that ignite a passion for the arts.

Best Buddies Picture

How many years has there been a Promoters program at your school?

Best Buddies has been a part of Riviera Preparatory School since 2013.

How did you learn about Best Buddies?

The previous Best Buddies president Francesca Rizzi shared the message and mission of Best Buddies to all of the student body during our school’s annual community service fair. The club was introduced by our art teacher, Janis Klein-Young.

What does Best Buddies mean to you?

Best Buddies means more than just a club. It is a message to get involved and impact the lives of others through friendship, leadership, and community. It means reaching out to people that only want to benefit the world.

What is your favorite thing to do as a chapter?

Our favorite thing to do as a chapter are the actual service events because participating in these service events is what really brings our chapter together. The turkey donation to Neva King Cooper is our biggest event, and now this year for our first time we will sell socks to promote Autism Speaks in our school.

How does your chapter engage with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD)?

We have donated turkeys and various other beneficial foods to the Neva King Cooper School for special education which engages students with autism and Downs Syndrome to learn at their greatest potential. We will also be selling socks for Autism Awareness Month backed by the organization “Are You Kidding” which benefits those with autism, a common developmental disability.

What event or activity are you most proud of?

This year was our second annual turkey drive to financially challenged families of the Neva King Cooper School for those with special needs. This event has proved to be successful and it is our first major event for each school year. It’s great to personally donate the Thanksgiving meals to the families and see their appreciation!

How do you feel your chapter has made an impact in your school/community?

In our school, we have made an impact on students by creating an awareness of accepting people for who they are. Being a part of Best Buddies teaches people to be less judgmental of others which is a valuable lesson to everyone. Also, our service events create a humbling experience for students. These service events also impact the community because we help several people such as the students at Neva King Cooper, and students at the Children’s Resource Center.

How has Best Buddies changed your life?

After making a best friend that has a disability, interviewing the founder of Best Buddies, gaining new insight about the organization, meeting wonderful and extraordinary people of all ages, and learning the impact that Best Buddies has made on others, my passion for Best Buddies has grown immensely along with my character and perspective and Best Buddies has been a substantial part of my community service.

Why do you think others should join Best Buddies?

I believe it gives people a great opportunity to help others, and to meet others who also enjoy giving their time to others. Being a member of Best Buddies leads to more compassionate and appreciative people. If we don’t respect one another, the world wouldn’t be able to function efficiently. Therefore, learning to accept people as they are is an important quality that everyone can benefit from.

Blue-Gold Buddy PairOn March 19, 2016, four of our High School buddies represented as honorary coaches for the Blue Gold All-Star Basketball Games. During this time, our buddies got the chance to interact with the players and coaches from different schools in their area. Not every school has a Best Buddies chapter, so these honorary coaches were the face of our mission for the entire week and afterwards, we had many coaches and parents approach us about how to start a chapter in their area!

The honorary coaching position is a great opportunity for both our players and the buddies to interact but this year was a unique one. A player on our Boys’ Gold Team, Justin, is also a part of the Middletown High School Best Buddies Chapter, and his Buddy, Alex, was chosen to be the Gold Team Honorary Coach. Everyone got the witness the impact of our programs through Alex and Justin’s friendship on and off the court!

SAMPLE STATE DIRECTOR IMAGE & MESSAGE

BBMA_StateDirectorCraigWelton_Q2

Best Buddies Massachusetts began 2014 with several major goals in mind, including expanding our Jobs and Friendship programs to central Massachusetts. As private and state revenue increased in 2014, we were able to hire new staff to oversee expansion throughout the commonwealth. Additionally, we wanted to increase our presence in schools within the city of Boston. With support from the school district, we opened three new chapters in this area in 2014. As my responsibilities increased with the Best Buddies Challenge in 2014, I identified the need for additional operational support. We created a new position and brought on a Best Buddies veteran, in late spring, as our director of operations. Heading into 2015, we are poised to fulfill our goals of expanding our success with Best Buddies Jobs beyond the greater Boston region, continuing to engage new communities with our Friendship programs, and increasing revenue through relationships with new employer partners, foundations, individuals, and through our signature special events.

Diligent work by our tireless programs teams brought about more opportunities for expansion in 2014. The Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission, pleased with our work in greater Boston, offered us a contract in the city of Worcester, which will help us bring integrated employment services to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in that area. We have had a long wait list of individuals who have been interested in our services for years. We have established several relationships with new foundations which will increase our capacity in central Massachusetts, as well. Our team includes veteran Best Buddies staffers who manage relationships statewide with grace, and sheer determination. It is these relationships, along with the exceptional dedication of thousands of volunteers, which enabled Best Buddies Massachusetts to reach our goals in 2014.

In 2015, we expect to serve 100 individuals with IDD through Best Buddies Jobs statewide, and oversee 120 chapters at middle schools, high schools, and colleges throughout the commonwealth. Our advisory board members are ready to help us implement the expansion projects that began in 2014 by helping to identify new employer partners outside the Boston area. By adding new staff positions to both our Friendship and Jobs teams, as well as adding infrastructure by bringing on a Director of Operations, we have increased our capacity to deliver the highest quality of services statewide.

Employers are increasingly recognizing the potential of individuals with autism—AT&T, Microsoft and the Israeli Army, to name a few. Several companies recently announced the 5,000 Initiative: Autism in Tech Workforce, a national campaign with the aim of employing 5,000 people on the autism spectrum in technology positions by 2020.

Our research and clinical experience suggest that this may only be the start. Indeed, people with autism have unique qualities, including heightened visual perception skills and attention to detail, that can be of great value to employers, especially in fields where innovation is key.

Live Like a Champ

$

I was soaked. I could hardly see. It was 2015, and I was a 23-year-old Dodgers rookie who was headed to the playoffs. You know the scene: The locker room was electric, corks popping, beer spraying. It was pure pandemonium. champ and joc

Just before I could take in how surreal the moment actually was, I saw my brother Champ across the room. Goggles on. Pouring champagne on his head right along with the guys.

Of course, he’s not a player, but it was just natural to see Champ there. Our executive VP, Lon Rosen, went out of his way to find Champ and bring him into the locker room. Honestly, I don’t think Lon would have noticed if I was in there. Just saying.

That’s the way it’s always been with Champ. He brings this happiness out of people all the time. They see how much fun it is to have him around. And what’s more, he’s always done everything with me. He’s in the locker room before games, he’s hanging with all the players. So this time was nothing different. Nothing special. Nothing put on. Champ’s just always been there.

Every person who meets him immediately knows what it means to “Live Like a Champ.” It means you stay positive, even on the tough days. Because let’s be honest, in between the champagne celebrations and the Dodgers games, life isn’t always so easy.

To my teammates who’ve met Champ, and to the others who have heard his speeches, you know. You can just feel his sense of life.

And for those who have yet to find out, here’s a little slice of what it’s like to live like Champ. Of course, I couldn’t do it without the man himself — who always knows how to tell a good story.

Over to you, Champ.
