Meet Austin and Mitch

Austin:

Why did you join Best Buddies?
During my junior year, my high school began a Unified Track program. My friend convinced me to join and that is where my passion for helping those with disabilities began. Mitch and I, along with several others, became very close through participating in Unified Track together. After I graduated from high school, I discovered my university (Marian University) offered Best Buddies. I joined the program because I wanted to help show people that they belong and that everyone is special. I also joined because I wanted to make new friendships!

What is your favorite part of Best Buddies?
My favorite part of Best Buddies is developing new friendships and seeing everyone interact with each other. I absolutely love seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces when our chapter comes together for our monthly events.

Is there anything you’re doing now that you did not before joining Best Buddies?
I believe Best Buddies has deepened my compassion for people. It has allowed me to see that we are all humans regardless of our disabilities or strengths. Even though Mitch and I have always been friends, Best Buddies has allowed us to grow closer and hang out more.

Do you think everyone should have a buddy and why?
Yes, I believe everyone should have a buddy because everyone needs someone to talk to. Having a buddy makes life more enjoyable and fun!

Is having a friend important to you?
Having a friend is essential to being human. As humans, I believe that we were created for connectivity and that we have a desire to belong. Best Buddies is an organization that allows everyone to feel like they belong.

Mitch is one of my best friends and has been very supportive during some hard times I have had. We both strive to help each other out when either of us is feeling down. I feel like we have a special relationship where we can just make each other smile and forget about the hardships going on. I am grateful I have Mitch as my friend, and I am grateful for what the Best Buddies organization is doing worldwide.

Why did you join Best Buddies?
I joined Best Buddies to build relationships with people my own age and hang out with one of my best friends, Austin.

What is your favorite part of Best Buddies?
My favorite part is everyone being included.

Is there anything you’re doing now that you did not before joining Best Buddies?
Respecting everyone’s abilities.

Do you think everyone should have a buddy and why?
Everybody should have a buddy. Respect is what builds friendships and character.

Is having a friend important to you?
Being friends with Austin is one of the most rewarding things in my life. Respect is a must for a great friendship.
